Gre at home software#
The test is administered through a downloadable software called “Proctor U.” All you need to be able to take the test is either a laptop or a desktop computer, a microphone, a webcam, and speakers.
While it seemed like a worthy initiative at the time to help students take the test despite the pandemic, it has since proved to be an utter disaster. The GRE General Test at Home was introduced by ETS early last year in the wake of the global pandemic that caused test-centers across the world to shut down. When taking the 10 min break I just said loudly that I'm taking a break(your webcam is constantly recording during the exam - so the Proctor can here you), left my white board in my desk and stepped outside of my room to grab a snack and used the restroom. I think you can only have one or the other. When the Proctor connects to your laptop, they will ask you to show the white board or a plastic sheet protector to your webcam so they can verify that it is acceptable. Overall, I feel like this was an awesome experience to be able to take the test from home and I feel for some it will alleviate the stress of actually taking the GRE at a test center.ġst question: I used a small white board for notes with two black dry erase markers. From there it was business as usual as if you were taking the GRE at an actual test center.
The Proctor will do a remote control of your laptop and verify a few things. The process for me took about 25min before a Proctor came online. Afterwards, you will wait for the Proctor to come online. You will go through a few procedures like taking a picture through your webcam and verifying your issued ID(I used my US driver's license). Initially, once your active link was open(the timer counting down to your test) the connection will open a chat box and you will wait until the Proctor is ready.
